The question arises while reading this: what is TPIN? TPIN is a 6 digit password that helps in authorising a broker to be able to debit the stock chosen from a Demat account. TPin is also known as an alternative to the Demat Power of Attorney.
The authorisation is given to the broker to easily withdraw the shares from the customer/client Demat account. The period for the validation of the pin is just of a day that too for selected stocks which is given.
The concept of CDSL Pin was introduced in the year 2020 in June. It is seen as the alternative to the Power of Attorney (PoA) that is given to the broker. The person who is going to access the CDSL has to sign a PoA to trade online, which used to be mandatory earlier.
The Central Depository Services (India) Ltd (CDSL) is one of the parts of two govt authorized and approved depositories. This pin helps in holding the Demat account and securities in it. Also, the stockbrokers are CDSL members who are named as depository participants (DP). They act as the mediators for the customer and the government authorized body CDSL to service the Demat account.
CDSL issues the pin directly to the customer. They also provide the facility from which the customer can easily reset the pin online at any time with an OTP on the phone.
Also, CDSL helps in managing the list of authorized securities for a customer. This process makes the complete process of broking safe as the broker’s temper with it illegally. Every stockbroker uses the CDSL TPIN which acts as a 3rd party service in their trading software.
Why is CDSL TPIN Required?
Here are the reasons why CDSL TPIN is required and its importance. While working with the CDSL TPIN the client is asked to sign a Power of Attorney by the stock broker during the time of account opening. This is limited to the PoA authorizing them to debit the securities from your Demat account. This is when you sell them.
Also, there have been few cases where the brokers were found misusing the PoA for their benefit. This includes:
- The withdrawal of the securities when the customer did not sell them.
- Moving of the shares from one account to another via the customer Demat account to the broker account without customer consent.
- Also, they use the PoA to scare the client for credit that they take from the trading losses.
The depositors tried to handle and misuse the account by sending the emails and SMS alerts related to the Demat transactions but this did not help much.
After hearing of such frauds and complaints CDSL decided to introduce the TPIN in the year 2020 on June 1. So TPIN acts as the additional password to the customer which is used by the customer to authorize the Demat transaction. Also, it is stored in the CDSL database which makes it safe from brokers misusing it.
